Trimble Unveils Quadband GSM/GPRS Version of TrimTrac Locator

Trimble introduced today its newest member of the TrimTrac locator product family. The TrimTrac 1.5 locator is a small, lightweight asset-monitoring device that requires little, if any, installation when used in its battery-powered configuration. Hardware and setting options allow the device to be configured to meet a variety of demanding installation and operational requirements. Like the original TrimTrac locator, motion-based reporting continues to be an important tool in minimizing power consumption and recurring communication costs. Trimble’s TrimTrac 1.5 locator, along with offerings from multiple location-based Application Service Providers (ASPs) that are compatible with the original TrimTrac locator, will be showcased at CeBIT, the world’s largest trade fair for digital IT and telecommunication solutions, March 9-15 in Hanover, Germany. The TrimTrac 1.5 locator supports all GSM frequencies (900/1800MHz and 850/1900 MHz) to take full advantage of cost-effective GPRS data rate plans and the near universal roaming capability of SMS text messaging. The TrimTrac 1.5 locator takes advantage of both technologies by automatically selecting GPRS wherever such service is available, while relying upon SMS text messages as backup when outside GPRS coverage. This helps minimize recurring communication costs while allowing the greatest coverage possible. Hardware Options, Expanded Capabilities A variety of hardware options are available to enhance the suitability of the TrimTrac 1.5 locator to particular application requirements. These options include optional plug-in modules plus a miniature external GPS antenna that allows for more discrete, protected installation of the TrimTrac 1.5 locator. Two optional plug-in modules are offered: vehicle adapter and control modules. Both modules provide connection to external 9-32 VDC power to eliminate the need to change batteries and can monitor inputs of three different priority levels. The control module also provides two outputs that can be used to control other on-board devices or systems, such as door locks, immobilizers and remote start systems. Enhanced Functional Capabilities Position reporting triggered by motion continues to be an important attribute of the TrimTrac 1.5 locator and it is backward compatible with applications developed for the first generation TrimTrac; however, a range of powerful new functional enhancements now augment this basic capability with the TrimTrac 1.5 locator. These functional enhancements include 1 Hz GPS operation, on-board geofence enforcement, scheduled hours of operation, multiple runtime meters, start/stop reporting mode, and more. The TrimTrac locator 1.5 is expected to be available in limited volumes in the second quarter and in quantity in the third quarter of 2006 through Trimble’s Component Technologies authorized distributors and service provider network.

Garmin Partners With GPS-Buddy Tracking for Fleets

Garmin International Inc. is pleased to announce a close partnership with GPS-Buddy, a technology company that provides logistical tracking and management solutions for businesses with fleet vehicles. This relationship lets corporations who use Garmin GPS units in their automotive fleets to track those vehicles in real time and communicate with mobile workers via the Garmin GPS unit. “Thanks to the real-time information transmitted through the GPS-Buddy unit, fleet managers can know where their fleet is and communicate with the drivers 24-hour-a-day, 7-days-a-week,” said Gary Kelley, vice president of marketing for Garmin International. “This information is especially helpful when unexpected delays occur and schedule changes must be made.” GPS-Buddy gives companies the tools they need to stay a step ahead of their fleet. Every 60-seconds, a secured GPS-Buddy server receives information about the vehicle’s location, speed, and status — such as engine data, loading door, and thermostat. The information is then available on the internet to GPS-Buddy customers. The data may be viewed at anytime on any device with internet access such as personal computers, Smartphones, or PDAs. “When GPS-Buddy and Garmin get together, the excitement begins,” said Philip Nathan, managing director of GPS-Buddy. “The combination with Garmin’s superior GPS-units and our proven fleet management technology is poised to further revolutionize the vehicle and mobile workforce market.” GPS-Buddy also makes it possible to use the Garmin GPS unit as a way to communicate between the office and vehicle. Through a process similar to text-messaging, a mobile worker may use the unit’s touch screen keyboard to send a message or record notes about their location. Similarly, the office can communicate with the driver by sending them a message that will appear on the unit’s screen. If the office needs to send the driver to a new location, the driver will receive turn-by-turn, voice-prompted directions to the new destination on the Garmin GPS unit. Garmin GPS navigators are designed to make GPS navigation easy for everyone. Selecting a destination is straightforward and requires a limited amount of input from the user. Once a destination is selected, the unit will provide automatic route calculation to any destination with turn-by-turn, voice-prompted directions along the way. If a motorist strays off course, a new route will automatically be calculated. Garmin has also made it possible for customers to augment the preloaded maps with custom points of interest such as school zones and safety cameras. GPS-Buddy Ltd. is a technology company which designs and provides fleet management software solution packages including hardware in order to let users track, monitor, manage and message vehicles and their mobile workers. GPS-Buddy is incorporated in Ireland with development and sales offices in Ireland, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium and Sri Lanka.

Wherify, SEAC Bring Enhanced GPS-Based Personal Location Services to Argentina

Wherify Wireless, Inc., a leading developer of patented wireless location products and services for family safety and communications, and SEAC, a provider of automated services and control systems and GPS-based fleet management and logistics in Argentina, announced an agreement that would position the two firms as key players in the Argentinean Location-Based Services market. Under the agreement, SEAC has committed to an initial purchase of 15,000 Wherifone G550 GSM/GPS Locator Phones over a twelve month period. Wherify’s Global Location Services Center will provide the core location management and mapping support for location-enabled communications and GPS location/safety services. “We’re very excited about working with SEAC to provide the benefits of the Wherifone GPS family safety phone to Argentinean consumers,” said Timothy Neher, Founder and CEO of Wherify. “SEAC will be able to offer Wherify-enabled personal location services that can enhance peoples’ lives, boost personal security, combat theft and help families stay in touch and locate each other.” “At SEAC, we’re always driving to provide our customers with the best services and technology, and Wherify’s location technology will help us deliver the latest in personal location and communications services and open new market opportunities,” said Jose Luis Blanco, President of SEAC. “This technology could help consumers in their daily lives with location-enabled personal concierge and safety services, enhance our current fleet management services and open up these services to new users, and enhance the effectiveness of public safety agencies — from fire crews and ambulances, to police units. Wherify-enabled services will offer real benefits to the Argentinean public.” The Wherifone provides affordable peace-of-mind to the modern mobile family. The slim, small and lightweight Tri-Band GSM cell phone (900/1800/1900 and 850/1800/1900) weighs under 70 grams and features incoming and outgoing calling, five programmable buttons for one touch dialing, a headset jack, and a backlit LCD display. The absence of a traditional dial pad helps parents and caregivers manage the expense of out-going calls, and provides ease-of-use. As well as two-way voice calling, the Wherifone features Enhanced-GPS location technology that lets it be located in lightly obstructed areas, such as many types of wood frame buildings and vehicles, and under dense foliage. The cell phone is supported by a Location Service Center which can be accessed 24 X 7 by telephone or the Internet to locate and plot a device’s position on both street maps and aerial photographs. Small businesses can also use the Wherifone to manage and communicate with mobile workers, manage the location of small fleets of trucks or delivery vehicles and coordinate dispatch destinations with drivers. The preprogrammed one-touch dialing buttons also help the small business owner manage communications expenses. The absence of a traditional dial pad prevents workers from using the Wherifone for personal calls and incurring unauthorized expenses, while at the same time insuring they can make necessary calls to up to five pre-defined locations.

Cyber Tracker Real-Time Video Feed to Secure America’s Waterways and Ports

Cyber Tracker up and Running on Louisiana Tugboat Fleet Using Data/GPS Device to Transmit Real-Time Video. Homeland Integrated Security Systems, Inc. has completed the installation of its revolutionary Cyber Tracker on the fleet of Rentrop Tugs, based on the Gulf Coast of Louisiana. The tugboat company is utilizing the Cyber Tracker’s data capabilities to transmit real-time video from every boat on its fleet. The video provides security as well as a way for the company to monitor things such as location and weather as its fleet works along the 400 miles of the Louisiana coastline. The cameras are now especially valuable due to the damage done last year by Hurricane Katrina, since many of the docks and shore structures have been destroyed. “Cyber Tracker has exceeded our expectations in terms of its functionality and performance and began working perfectly upon installation,” said Patrick Rentrop, of Rentrop Tugs, Inc. “Because our fleet of tugboats and towboats traditionally work in remote locations and extreme environments, the real-time streaming video and GPS tracking features of Cyber Tracker will be an exceptional asset to our company and will also be of tremendous value to our customers.” The Cyber Tracker is a GPS device that features real-time tracking, geo-fencing, and push-to-talk technology along with an extended-life battery. Its Ethernet port provides the ability to transmit wireless data and video. Developed by Homeland Security Systems, the Cyber Tracker is the first of its kind to offer this combination of technology in a tracking device that monitors a vehicle’s location, stops, and speed, all at an affordable cost. The Cyber Tracker’s convenient rugged design (5″ x 5″ x 1″) makes it applicable in a variety of situations where it is necessary to know the exact location of a person or object. “The Cyber Tracker is such and impressive device, we will be ordering more of the units for installation in our company’s trucks and cars used in transporting supplies and crews. The Cyber Tracker is going to be a big ‘hit’ with the marine transportation industry,” continued Rentrop.

GPS Device Enables Travelers to Track, Locate Luggage Lost by Airlines

You arrive to give a speech at a conference, but your bags don’t. After spending hours running around to replace necessities, your bags arrive just in time to return home. You arrive at your dream vacation destination, only to find that your bags have not arrived with you. The first few days of what should be pure relaxation are spent worrying about whether your bags will ever arrive. If either of these scenarios hits close to home, then MicroTRAK GPS, a leading provider of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) technology and products, has the answer for you — SlimTRAK. MicroTRAK offers this solution to travelers following the release of recent findings by the U.S. Department of Transportation, that U.S.-based airlines last year lost approximately 10,000 bags a day on average, the worst performance since 1990.
