GPS for all NY City emergency vehicles
According to a recent report in NY1 News, all of New York City’s fire trucks and ambulances will be fitted with GPS devices by the end of this summer. (4/21/2006)

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that the system would let dispatchers know which units are closest to an emergency and find the fastest route to get there.

Some ambulances in Brooklyn and Staten Island were already GPS-equipped as part of a pilot program, and tests showed a 33-second reduction in emergency response times.”

Gearworks Leverages Nextel Wireless GPS Platform

etrace:worksight.lite edition provides cost-effective, easy-to-use solution for gaining visibility into any mobile workforce using Java and non Java-enabled mobile devices

Gearworks, a leading provider of mobile workforce management software, announced today the availability of the newest member of its flagship etrace product family - etrace:worksight.lite edition - designed to work with the Nextel Wireless GPS Platform from Sprint. etrace:worksight.lite is ideally suited for small-to-medium businesses seeking an economical solution for gaining mobile workforce visibility. The etrace product family, previously available only on Nextel Java phones, can now also support non Java-enabled handsets allowing businesses to leverage their existing investment.

The new etrace edition features GPS tracking capabilities using non Java-enabled handsets such as the i205, i305, i315 and i530 within Nextel’s product line, and gives business managers and dispatchers a zero-field-training solution for monitoring their mobile workforce. etrace:worksight.lite edition provides near-real-time fleet and worker maps, location-intelligent alerts, and WorkZone reports that provide insight into daily activities such as drive time and number of worker stops.

“Using etrace:worksight.lite edition and the Nextel Wireless GPS Platform from Sprint, small-to-medium businesses can begin monitoring their mobile workforce without investing a lot of time and money to get a solution up and running,” said Todd J. Krautkremer, president and chief executive officer for Gearworks. “Since there is no mobile client on the phone, customers can start benefiting from greater field visibility without buying new handsets or retraining field workers.”

The Nextel Wireless GPS Platform from Sprint is a network-based location tracking solution that works with a wide range of standard handsets (Java and non Java-enabled) to provide GPS location information without the need for an application on the device.

etrace:worksight.lite is available now and can be Sprint direct billed for $19.95 per month, including Nextel data access charges.

Comtech Lands Army National Guard Movement Tracking System Orders

Comtech Telecommunications Corp. announced today that its Maryland-based subsidiary, Comtech Mobile Datacom Corporation, has received orders totaling $12.6 million on its Movement Tracking System, or MTS contract, with the U.S. Army. The total includes $3.3 million of MTS program orders and a $9.3 million initial order for the Army National Guard’s acquisition of MTS equipment and services.

The $9.3 million order is the initial Army National Guard order which is being funded pursuant to the recently enacted supplemental Army National Guard and Army Reserve Equipment Plan. Such plan includes $113.6 million for National Guard MTS procurements and related program office expenses. Total orders received to date against the $418.2 million U.S. Army logistics contract, including the National Guard order, increased to $246.9 million.

The orders are for the supply of Comtech’s next generation Model MT-2012 mobile satellite transceivers, which feature embedded Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and secure Global Positioning System (GPS) capabilities, along with both ruggedized and control station computers, installation kits and services, as well as training and spare parts. Comtech’s Model MT-2012 Transceiver features Savi Technology’s ISO-compliant EchoPoint RFID Reader, which Savi also has deployed in the U.S. Department of Defense’s In-Transit Visibility (ITV) network.

Fred Kornberg, President and Chief Executive Officer of Comtech Telecommunications Corp., said, “We are extremely pleased to have received our first Army National Guard order from the recently passed supplemental funding bill, as well as orders for the continuing support of the U.S. Army. Our field-proven technology has been used extensively by the U.S. Army and Army National Guard in areas of conflict, such as Iraq and Afghanistan.”

Mr. Kornberg added, “This National Guard order is the first of multiple orders we expect to receive which will place this proven satellite tracking and communication system in the hands of the National Guard’s first responders. This critical communications capability will enable the Guard to better prepare for and react to disaster and recovery operations at the local, state and national levels. The initial units will be fielded in the hurricane-prone states. These new orders are indicative of the vital roles our communication and network technologies play in providing communications capabilities when conventional telecommunications systems are unavailable or ineffective.”

High Gas Prices Push Need For GPS Vehicle Tracking/Routing

With gas prices again topping $3, business owners are scrambling to find new ways to save money at the gas pumps. One Cleveland-based company, SageQuest, offers a total fleet management solution, and is helping businesses around Northeast Ohio and nationwide document fuel cost savings through improved driver routing, real time tracking, and automated reporting.

Using GPS-based technology, proprietary software and hardware, SageQuest enables company owners and dispatchers to route their drivers to designated locations in the shortest amount of time. Since the product operates in real time, the built-in mapping software lets supervisors track the movement of their vehicles, cutting down on wasted mileage and unauthorized vehicle use.

A built-in vehicle maintenance module alerts supervisors when it’s time for an oil change, tire rotation, or 3,000 mile tune-up, for example, and can accommodate fleets of all sizes. The product also provides real-time notification if a driver is speeding. All of these features deliver a streamlined, effective and efficient end result: total fleet management, improved productivity and documented fuel savings. One SageQuest customer has realized a 700 gallon per month decrease in fuel consumption by eliminating unauthorized use. Their payback is $145.83 per month, per vehicle, in fuel savings. Other fuel savings examples are available.
