NZ taxis with GPS may be exempt from proposed new laws
According to a recent NZPA report, taxi companies with GPS may be exempt from proposed new laws that threaten to axe taxi drivers who can’t understand English or don’t know where their passengers want to go. (1/23/2006)
Following complaints about taxi drivers’ abilities, legislation is expected to come into force later this year that would require taxi drivers to sit more stringent area knowledge and English language tests. Those that don’t make the grade would be taken off the road.
However, New Zealand Taxi Federation executive director Tim Reddish said companies with GPS may be exempt from the area testing provisions, as the drivers would have all the information in their cabs and at their disposal.
