Tracking Key Pro Review

landairsea-1
Tracking Key Pro is a GPS tracking system. We recently got our hands on this little but powerful device and now we’d like to share with you what we think.

Tracking Key Pro is not the smallest of GPS receivers we’ve seen but it is still very compact. Actually most the space is taken up by the 2AA battery slot.

As soon as we take the GPS device out of the packaging we get the ‘run cd first’warning which you can’t miss. So we pop the CD in and it starts installing Past-Track and some other drivers. No problems. Then as per quick start guide we put in a pair of fresh AA batteries and connect to our PC. PC says hardware is ready to use.

landairsea-2Now it is time to take our GPS tracker outside to see how fast it gets a GPS fix. On a sunny day with no clouds this took less than 3 minutes which is decent considering it was a cold start and the device had to do all the calculations from scratch. A little issue here is that the blinking green LED which is supposed to indicate a GPS fix is very very difficult see. But as long as it is working it is not a big deal.

Next step is to place this somewhere on our vehicle. The manual suggest a few places such as the front or rear dash, inside plastic bumpers,on top of the roof, etc. However we would like to see how good is the little magnet and how fast can we install our GPS tracker –since we may be part of a covert operation and time maybe of the essence :)

In our test we were able to find a few metallic surfaces under our test vehicle –Honda Civic –such as inside the wheel hub or just underneath the vehicle. It holds a lot better where there are no layers of dirt. Thanks to the strong magnet installation usually takes less than 10 seconds. All you have to do is keep your victim away from their vehicle less than a minute :)

Now onto the road test. Will the magnet hold? Since Tracking Key Pro Review is NOT a real time GPS tracking device you’ll have to collect the device after your mission to get your data. So it is essential the magnet be strong enough to keep the tracking device in place.

We drove over some speed humps way too fast, slammed on the breaks a few times to shake the car a bit. Then got out of the car to see if our GPS device was still in place. Sure enough,it didn’t even budge. That magnet is strong. Would it still hold on if we had it on a Jeep off-road’ing? Maybe, maybe not. We can’t tell. But for most of you this magnet should do the job.

In fact under the vehicle is not even a suggested place for this device. If you have access to inside of the vehicle none of this is an issue for you. You can even connect to car’s battery and then you won’t worry about battery life either. We just wanted to test our GPS tracking device for “not recommended”scenarios :)

We left the Tracking Key Pro under the vehicle for a few hours and then put it in the glove compartment. The manual says this location 80-95% effective. And then we forgot it about for a few days. We want to collect data until the battery dies. We carried on with our daily driving.

After four days we found the GPS fix LED still going strong. So we can’t really tell you exactly how long the batteries will last on this GPS tracking device, but you should easily get 4 days without any problems. Tracking Key Pro is definitely not a power hog. The manual actually says a pair of AA’s should last you 4 weeks with 2 hours of driving a day. You can’t beat that.

landairsea-7Like we just said we took the device out of the glove compartment after four days and connected to our computer. We fired up the Past-Track software that came on the CD. It found the device without a glitch and the user interface was easy to work with. It downloaded the data, cleared the logs from the device, and then asked us where to save the data. After four days of driving with regular commuting the resulting file is only 1.5MB. Manual says Tracking Key Pro can hold 100 hours worth of driving. When you open this 1.5MB file it gives you three options. One of them is for Google Earth, the other is street level US maps, and the final one is just activity report.

Activity report is quite extensive giving you daily reports with total mileage, total driving time, max speed, and approximate address for each stop along with arrival time, distance, and stopped time. It gets saved as an .html which is really easy to use where each address is actually a URL to Google Maps. Well done!

The street level US maps actually lets you “play”your daily activity complete with a moving car icon, speedometer, and a clock. Again –this worked very well and was really easy to use. The Google Earth is just what you’d expect. This option worked flawlessly too.

In the end we were very pleased with the Tracking Key Pro GPS tracker. The battery lasts, magnet is strong, works even underneath the car,and the software is definitely useful. We really have no complaints and we think it is suitable anywhere from business use to small size covert operations. It costs $270 and you can see where you can pick it up from at LandAirSea website.

Note:We’ll be giving away this Tracking Key Pro Review pretty soon. Stay tuned.
