What is BLE asset tracking?
A BLE tag broadcasts a short identifier at intervals. Anything nearby that is listening — a fixed gateway, a smartphone, a vehicle unit — hears it and reports that detection, along with its own known location, to the platform.
This is the key difference from GPS. A GPS tracker works out where it is and tells you. A BLE tag simply announces that it exists; the location comes from the receiver. That inversion is what makes BLE cheap, small and long-lived, and it is also what defines its limits.
Because the tag does no positioning work and uses very little power, tags can be small, thin and inexpensive enough to deploy across large fleets of low-value assets. The trade-off is that a tag is only visible where something is listening for it.
In most logistics environments that trade-off is acceptable, because the questions being asked are zone-based anyway: is this cage inside the depot, has this tote left the site, how long has this trolley been in the staging area.
Tags, gateways, phones and vehicle units
A BLE deployment has two halves: the tags on the assets, and the detection layer that hears them.
BLE tags
Small battery-powered beacons attached to assets. Available as cards, pucks, cable ties, adhesive tags and ruggedised housings depending on the environment and how long they must survive.
Fixed gateways
Mains or PoE powered receivers mounted at dock doors, gates, corridors and zone boundaries. They produce reliable, repeatable entry and exit events, which is what dwell and cycle measurement depend on.
Smartphone detection
Phones acting as mobile receivers. Useful for audits, sweeps, low-traffic sites and customer locations where installing fixed hardware is impractical.
Vehicle units
Receivers in trucks, vans and forklifts that detect which tags are on board. This is how you learn what actually travelled, not just what was planned to travel.
Zone design
Where receivers go determines what you can see. Good deployments start from the events you need — left site, arrived at customer, entered wash bay — and place detection accordingly.
Mixed estates
BLE rarely stands alone. Tags cover the volume, cellular or GPS devices cover the assets that travel beyond the network, and both appear in the same asset list in GoAndTrack.
BLE versus GPS: when each makes sense
This is a cost and coverage decision, not a quality one. GPS answers 'exactly where, anywhere'. BLE answers 'which zone, cheaply, across many assets'.
GPS and cellular devices suit assets that move unpredictably across long distances and must report without local infrastructure: trailers, containers, high-value shipments, plant moving between customer sites. They cost more per unit and need more power, so they are deployed where that cost is justified by the asset value or the risk.
BLE suits assets that are numerous, individually inexpensive and circulate within a known network of sites: totes, trays, cages, tools, trolleys, stillages. Tagging ten thousand of those with cellular devices is rarely viable; tagging them with BLE usually is.
Indoors, the comparison is not close. GPS performs badly inside buildings, while BLE works well because the environment is exactly where you would place receivers anyway. For warehouse and intralogistics use cases, BLE is normally the starting point.

What BLE will and will not tell you
Being direct about this saves failed deployments: BLE reports detections, and where there is no detection there is no update.
If an asset sits at a customer site with no gateway, no phone scan and no vehicle passing, its record will show a last-seen location and time rather than a live position. For dwell and recovery workflows that is usually enough — you know where it went and when — but it is not continuous tracking.
Accuracy within a covered area is also zone-based. You will know an asset is in the goods-in area, not that it is three metres from the second racking bay, unless the deployment is specifically engineered for higher-resolution positioning.
Battery life, tag durability and read reliability vary by hardware and environment. Metal, liquids and dense racking all affect BLE performance, which is why pilots in the real environment matter more than datasheet comparisons.

Do I need gateways everywhere?
No. Gateways are placed where events matter — dock doors, gates, entrances, wash bays, key zones. Between those points you get last-seen information, which is normally enough for dwell and cycle measurement.
Can smartphones detect BLE tags?
Yes. Phone-based detection is a practical way to add coverage at sites where fixed infrastructure is not justified, and to perform manual sweeps or audits.
When should I choose BLE over GPS?
Choose BLE when assets are numerous, individually low in value, and move mostly within sites or a known network of locations. Choose GPS or cellular when assets travel unpredictably and must report from anywhere without local infrastructure.
