What is intralogistics tracking?

Intralogistics tracking is asset visibility inside the four walls — and the yard — rather than across the network. The unit of answer is a zone and a duration, not a coordinate.

Internal movement is where a surprising amount of operational loss hides. A cage that should have gone to dispatch sits in staging for six hours. A trolley of work-in-progress is somewhere in the building, and three people spend twenty minutes finding it. A returnable pool is short at the start of a shift because units are still in the wash area.

None of this appears in a transport system, and much of it does not appear in a warehouse management system either, because the system believes a task was completed while the physical item stayed put. Tracking makes the physical reality visible alongside the system record.

How it works

Zones, gateways and detection inside a site

A site is divided into meaningful zones — goods-in, staging, production cells, dispatch, wash, yard — and detection points are placed where crossing between them matters.

Zone design

Zones are defined around the decisions you make, not the floor plan. If nobody acts differently based on a boundary, it does not need to be a zone.

Fixed gateways

Readers at doors, aisle ends and dock positions produce clean entry and exit events, which are what dwell reporting depends on.

Vehicle detection

Forklift and MHE-mounted receivers detect tags as equipment moves, extending coverage without wiring the whole building.

Smartphone scanning

Phone-based detection for audits, sweeps and lower-traffic areas where fixed hardware is not justified.

Dwell measurement

How long items sit in each zone, which is usually the metric that exposes where flow is breaking down.

Alerts

Raise an exception when an item overstays in a zone, or leaves an area it should not have left.

Why not use GPS inside a warehouse?

Satellite positioning performs poorly indoors. BLE tags detected by gateways, phones or vehicle units give reliable zone-level visibility in exactly the environments where GPS struggles.

What level of accuracy can I expect indoors?

Zone, area or room level in a standard deployment — enough to know an item is in goods-in, staging or a specific aisle group. Metre-level positioning requires a purpose-built high-density deployment.

What assets are usually tracked inside a site?

Roll cages, totes, trolleys, pallets, tooling, test equipment, handling equipment and work-in-progress carriers — anything that gets searched for or held up when it goes missing.

Does this replace a WMS?

No. A WMS manages stock and tasks; intralogistics tracking tells you where the physical carriers and equipment actually are. The two are complementary, and tracking often exposes gaps between the system record and reality.
