What is asset tracking?
Asset tracking is the practice of knowing where an asset is, what condition it is in and how it is being used, by attaching a device to that asset — or detecting it as it passes fixed infrastructure — and feeding the resulting data into a central platform.
In practice, asset tracking covers a wide range of situations. A pharmaceutical shipment being monitored for temperature is asset tracking. So is a pool of ten thousand roll cages circulating between depots and customer sites, a trailer sitting in a yard, or a set of test rigs moving between production areas inside a single building.
What those situations share is a question that is surprisingly hard to answer without a system: where is the asset, when was it last seen, what state is it in, and is that acceptable? What differs is the technology used to answer it. Long-range outdoor movement usually needs cellular or GPS. Dense indoor movement is more often solved with Bluetooth Low Energy. Sensitive goods add condition sensing on top of location.
Most organisations end up with a mix, because no single device type is right for every asset. That mix is the reason asset tracking so often fragments into several vendor portals, spreadsheets and email chains — and the reason a provider-agnostic operational layer matters.

GPS, BLE and cellular asset tracking
The right tracking technology depends on where the asset goes, how long it must run unattended, and how precise the location needs to be. Most estates use more than one.
GPS asset tracking
Satellite positioning gives good outdoor accuracy anywhere with sky view, reported back over cellular. Best for vehicles, trailers, containers and high-value assets moving across long distances. Power draw is the main constraint, so reporting intervals are usually tuned to the use case.
BLE asset tracking
Low-cost, long-life Bluetooth tags detected by gateways, smartphones or vehicle units. Gives zone, site or proximity level visibility rather than precise coordinates, which is usually enough indoors and across sites. Read more on our BLE asset tracking page.
Cellular asset tracking
Devices reporting directly over mobile networks, often combining GNSS with network-based location. Useful where an asset must report from anywhere without local infrastructure, including single-use smart labels on shipments.
Smart labels
Thin, low-cost labels applied directly to cartons, pallets or packaging. Well suited to one-way or single-use journeys where a returnable tracker would not come back.
Fixed sensors
Sensors mounted in a location rather than on an asset — cold rooms, storage zones, production areas. They monitor the environment an asset sits in rather than the asset itself.
Gateway detection
Fixed or mobile receivers that log tags passing through a doorway, dock, yard or vehicle. This is how unpowered and low-cost assets gain visibility without carrying an expensive tracker.
Fixed versus mobile assets
Mobile assets move and need to be located; fixed assets stay put and need to be monitored. GoAndTrack handles both, and the difference changes which data matters more.
For a mobile asset — a trailer, a returnable cage, a monitored shipment — the primary questions are location, movement and dwell. Where is it, how long has it been there, and is that longer than it should be? Geofences and dwell rules do most of the work.
For a fixed monitored point — a cold room, an ambient storage area, a laboratory — location is static and the important data is environmental: temperature, humidity and the alerting thresholds around them. That is covered in detail on our fixed condition monitoring page.
Real operations contain both, which is why they are treated as one estate rather than two products. A cold-chain operation may monitor a warehouse chill room, the vehicles leaving it and the individual pallets inside those vehicles, and expect the exceptions from all three to arrive in the same queue.
Asset location, status, geofencing and condition
Location on its own rarely resolves an operational problem. What resolves it is location combined with status, history and a rule that says when something is wrong.
Geofencing turns raw coordinates into meaning. Draw a zone around a depot, a customer site, a yard or a warehouse area, and movement becomes an event: entered, left, still here after 14 days. Those events are what feed alerting and reporting, and what make an asset estate manageable at scale.
Condition monitoring adds the second dimension. Depending on the connected hardware, that can include temperature, humidity, shock, light, battery or other signals — not every device reports every sensor type, and the platform reflects what each device actually provides rather than assuming a full set.
