What is condition monitoring?
Condition monitoring is the ongoing measurement of the physical environment around goods or equipment, so that a deviation from acceptable limits is detected while there is still time to respond.
The most common measurements are temperature and humidity, because they determine whether food, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and many industrial materials remain fit for use. Depending on the device, monitoring can also cover shock, tilt, light exposure or door openings.
What makes monitoring operational rather than academic is the rule attached to it. A temperature series is just data; a threshold with a duration — for example, above eight degrees for more than thirty minutes — is an exception that someone can be told about and can act on.

Why condition data belongs next to location data
An excursion is far easier to resolve when you can see where it happened. Location context turns an alert into a diagnosis.
A temperature breach that occurs while a trailer sits at a dock for two hours is a different problem from one that occurs mid-route, and both are different from one that occurs in a chill room overnight. Without location, all three look identical in a report.
Pairing the two also improves accountability across a chain of custody. When goods pass between your own operation, a carrier and a customer site, the combined record shows which leg the deviation occurred in — which is usually the question that matters commercially.
